I did however used to think, you know, in the woods walking, and as a kid playing in the woods, that there was a kind of immanence there — that woods, and places of that order, had a sense, a kind of presence, that you could feel; that there was something peculiarly, physically present, a feeling of place almost conscious ... like God. It evoked that.
I am frightened by today's world, terrified by it. I think that comes out in the books. I'm afraid of big things. Some of these schools have three thousand kids, and even the size of the schools frightens me. Big government frightens me; so does big defense.
If you start thinking about the kids being born now, for them the computer is ancient history. So one imagines that when children think of it as the only place to be, because there isn't anywhere else, then the geniuses of those generations will find their way into doing something that is impressive and as good as a Shakespeare or a Cervantes. But nowadays, we can't see that. We're not close enough to it yet.
A family is a bunch of people who keep confusing you with someone you were as a kid.
All is illusion, although as long as there's an illusion that the kids need to be fed, all might as well be reality.
I made films from the - when I was a little kid, my father bought me a movie camera. I just wanted to. I don't know how. You just learn, you just do it. You just do it.
C'mon kid. Think a minute, even if it hurts.
It would be great to see somebody like Kid Rock kissing a man. But I'm sure that he wouldn't like the prospect of it put to him, and I won't even go there with Eminem.
Once you establish a foundation of knowing what the greatest recording artists of all time were Wouldn't you want your kids to know this stuff?
I might have been too tiny for it, but I wanted to become a professional tennis player. I was a pretty good tennis player as a kid, but ultimately I just don't think that I have that jock mentality needed for sports.
I don't really think kids care much these days - they just tell you to f*** off.
I have always found clowns really fascinating, especially on film. Even as a kid I was never scared of them.
For some reason, Horror movies, they seem like good date movies. When you go to them it's all high school kids, all over each other, running up and down the isles, no one is even looking at the screen anyways, they figure they don't have to pay attention to the story anyways. We scream and yell... it's like mayhem.
People just like the thrill of anything. Dangerous things and dark things are exciting. Like as a kid, I knew I wasn't going to get killed if I went into the Haunted House but you kind of feel like you are. And when it comes out the track the other side, it's like, "we're still alive"! And I find it really funny when adults get really scared because I've not been really scared since I saw Jaws when I was a little kid. I just think people like the thrill of it, they like to feel like they accomplished something, that they survived the movie.
Most kids don't believe in fairy tales very long. Once they hit six or seven they put away "Cinderella" and her shoe fetish, "The Three Little Pigs" with their violation of building codes, "Miss Muffet" and her well‐shaped tuffet—all forgotten or discounted. And maybe that's the way it has to be. To survive in the world, you have to give up the fantasies, the make‐believe.
'American Horror' is the debasement of the suburban family, the way a lonely kid would have imagined it in the Seventies.
I think for every parent, they know their kids better than anybody else, and they have to just trust their own instincts.
Like so many other office workers of the world, I will obey my master, the clock, and will obediently nod to my co-workers and make small talk about sports, kids and weather - all things I'm not genuinely interested in.
I always thought I would have boys, but as a father, when your kids are born and they’re healthy and happy, that’s the most important thing.
Learning to drive is a scary thing for a parent. I had to basically lie to get the keys when I was a kid.
I am the guy dressing up in, you know, the caveman outfit for the kids birthday parties.
Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a kid?
I love the shared experience of watching a movie with my kids. One of the great joys in life is when we're all laughing together, at the same thing.
I'm straightforward with my kids, I take my kids out and I bring my daughter to dance lessons. I'm teaching my son how to ski, and my wife supports them and my wife has some issues. What, you just dismiss them? You just walk away? I don't walk away from anyone, Bill, in life! I'm sitting here and support people that are down and out! All these rich and elitist people, I'm sick of them! I'm sick of them! No, they're perfect. They don't do nothing! Get outta here! 'They don't do nothing!' They're the biggest crooks around!
A slam dunk or a breakdance move is limited by what the physical body can do. Now, a skateboard is limitless by design, by not only the dynamic of the board and the way it goes but also what you build to skate on. Basically it's like a slam dunk contest that will progress every for the life of the sport. Five years from now there are going to be kids doing stuff that we didn't think was possible.
