The reality of the other person is not in what he reveals to you, but in what he cannot reveal to you. Therefore, if you would understand him, listen not to what he says but rather to what he does not say.
He who understands you is greater kin to you than your own brother. For even your own kindred neither understand you nor know your true worth.
It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding; and to the open-handed the search for one who shall receive is joy greater than giving.
Yet has not Man wept at the sounds? And are not his tears eloquent understanding?
