I'm a singer who moves like a dancer.

As a dancer I couldn't outdance Ginger Rogers or Eleanor Powell. As a singer I'm no rival to Doris Day. As an actress I don't take myself seriously...I'm the girl the truck drivers love.

It is a fine art because it strives for an ideal, not only in plastic but also in lyrical respect.

All dancers are, by and large, a photographer's dream. They communicate with their bodies and they are trained to be completely responsive to a collaborative situation.

I'm not going to be dancing with the stars at this stage in my life. But I want to dance and bop around, and I did, and I can.

There are a lot of things that dancers can do that actors cannot and actors can do that dancers cannot.

Dancing serves no necessary use, no profitable, laudable, or pious end at all. It is only from the inbred pravity, vanity, wantonness, incontinency, pride, profaneness, or madness of man's depraved nature.

Dancing is at once rational & healthful: it gives animal spirits; it is the natural amusement of young people, & such it has been from the days of Moses.

Man has used human rhythmic movement as raw material out of which to create works of art, as the composer of music uses sound, the sculptor uses stone and wood, the painter his pigments, and the writer - words.

What I mean is that none of my talents had a - what's that great word - rubric. A singer, an actor, a dancer - there was nothing I could really say I was. The writing came much later. And, actually, thank God, because if I had said I'm a singer, I would really have just had one thing to do.

Feel indebted. Feel grateful. Then abundance grows.

One of our problems is our sense of discipline - dancers have an extraordinary sense of self-discipline.

Now I want to become an artist, rather than one thing, like a dancer, or a movie star, or a choreographer.

When doctrines divide and "isms" turn human against human, without speech, without silence, let us demonstrate. Let these demonstrations manifest everywhere. Not what we think or say but what we do shall avail - on with the dance.

It was then that my religious consciousness emerged to flower years afterward into definite forms of religious dancing in which there is no sense of division between spirit and flesh, religion and art.

But in reality we are accompanied by the whole dancing universe.

I look around me and I don’t see any rock’n’roll at the moment. Instead it’s all choreography and stylists and wigs and stuff. It’s like they’re afraid to let the music breathe. No one has their own identity like the Ronettes did back in the day. We had the skirts with the slits up the side, sort of tough, sort of Spanish Harlem cool, but sweet too. We didn’t have no dancers, we didn’t have no goddamn wigs.

Now death is with us in such abundance and hovers over us in so massive a form that we don't have time to invent a mythology, nor is our creativity directed toward same. Now it's to prevent death.

The dance is the mother of all languages.

If I can play one note and make you cry, then that's better than those fancy dancers playing twenty notes.

What is dance? I am dancing all the time. Every gesture, the body line of every pose, the way I get from place to place, the movement in the acting - none of it would be the way it is if I weren't a dancer.

There is guidance for each of us, and by lowly listening we shall hear the right word.

Anywhere everywhere! Anything anyhow! just dance!
